Written by Martin Luther around the 1520s the song quickly established itself as a sort of protestant anthem. It was originally translated into finnish by Jaakko Finno in 1583. The text was updated by Elias Lönnroot in 1864 and again by committee in 1886. It is said both the armies (which were around 1/3rd made up of finns) of Gustav Adolf II (aka "Gustavus Adolphus") and Charles XII (aka "Carolus Rex") sang the song before going into battle. The song was also extremely popular during the Second World War and remains one of the most popular hymns in Finland today. Subsequently this now 500-year old hymn is sung in the finnish defence forces to this very day. I have decided to add literal english translations.
