I was 18 years old, and suddenly, I had no friends. It sucked. This is a bit of a different video for me. I’m nervous posting this (especially knowing people in my real life may watch it) but I've watched similar videos about not having friends and wanted to talk about something I’ve struggled with for the past 10 years. Somehow this video ended up being a 45 minute therapy session to myself (which I edited down), so you might want to grab yourself a hot drink ☕️ This was unscripted, so I forgot to elaborate on some things: I think there’s a big difference between having people you can socialise with and friends you have on a deeper level. I’ve always craved more meaningful friendships. At university, even when I had a friendship group, I felt lonely and I felt like I didn’t really belong, which is why I say the friendships were superficial because they didn’t fulfil my needs in a friendship. This may just be my idea of what makes a friendship real. I started university off as a very closed off person who kept a facade up, I didn’t really let people see me/get to know me properly which most likely held me back from having deeper friendships. If I was to do university all over again, I’d like to believe I would have been able to make friends more easily, but I just think we grow up with an idea of what uni will be like (I definitely imagined living in a flat with a bunch of friends who I stayed close with like in the tv show) and it’s not like that for everyone. Watching this video back, I’ve made it sound like being aware of social anxiety solved all of my problems. It definitely didn’t. Even after that I was desperately hoping I’d make good friends but the difference is, I started to have more belief in myself and that meant I wasn’t constantly upset about the lack of friendships in my life. I moved to Manchester from London and not knowing anyone here apart from my partner/his friends + family, I do sometimes feel like I have no friends around me again.
