Star composer Howard Shore has achieved worldwide renown for his work on such films as HUGO and THE AVIATOR (Martin Scorsese), THE LORD OF THE RINGS and THE HOBBIT trilogies (Peter Jackson), SE7EN (David Fincher) and THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS (Jonathan Demme), amongst others. He has scored 15 films by David Cronenberg, including his latest MAPS TO THE STARS. Shore is the recipient of three Academy Awards, three Golden Globes and four Grammy Awards. In this master class, Shore will elaborate on how sound and score shape the visual onscreen cinematic world and the spaces in which stories unfold. His experience scoring multiple films with auteur directors sheds light on the working relationship between director and composer, as well as how sound and music can create a "meta space" between the works of a trilogy or a director’s oeuvre. Howard Shore Canadian-born composer. In a career spanning over 40 years he has scored over 90 films for directors like David Cronenberg, Martin Scorsese, Jonathan Demme, Tim Burton, David Fincher, Stephen Frears and Peter Jackson. Among his many international awards are several Oscars, Golden Globes and Grammys for his work on the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy. Moderated by Peter Cowie Film historian and former International Publishing Director of Variety magazine, he has written more than 30 books on major figures and eras of world cinema, including Bergman, Welles, Coppola, and Kurosawa. He published and edited the annual International Film Guide for 40 years. Peter has also contributed numerous commentaries to Criterion's DVD collection. He has been a consultant to Berlinale Talents since the programme's inception in 2003.
