George Frideric Handel (1685 - 1759) was "the greatest composer that ever lived" according to Beethoven. This sonata for violin and keyboard (harpsichord) was written between 1749-50 and was the last piece of chamber music Handel would ever compose. In this video, Dr. Brady Spitz performs the second movement (Allegro) and offers some advice on how to approach the piece from both a practical and an historically informed perspective. Aspects of the baroque style are discussed in order to give the student confidence in their interpretation and execution of ornaments like trills and mordents. A brief analysis of the form of the piece is also presented in order to give some musical suggestions concerning phrasing and articulation.
