The technological advancements necessary for a manned mission to Mars seems overwhelming. However, what if the advancements that make inner-planetary missions possible could be used by earthlings while still on their home planet? As NASA prepares to return to the moon and then on to Mars, keeping humans healthy on these journeys will be a daunting task. A Mars trip will take more than a year and a half, during which time the crew will be exposed to harmful radiation, confined quarters, delayed communications and limited supplies with no ability to restock. They are likely to get sick. This requires us to come up with an entirely new model of providing healthcare: where the patient is also the provider (together with an artificial intelligence), where all medical provisions could fit in something not much larger than a breadbox, where the human is constantly monitored and sickness prevented rather than treated after the fact. The technological and scientific advances we create today for protecting astronauts during deep space exploration will translate to paradigm shifts for healthcare here back on earth. As director for the Translational Research Institute for Space Health (TRISH), Dorit Donoviel, Ph.D., leads a $0.25B NASA-funded innovation research and development program that finds, funds and facilitates disruptive human health and performance solutions for astronauts traveling in deep space. Dr. Donoviel is Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Chemical Biology and the Center for Space Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM). Before joining BCM, she led metabolism drug discovery programs at Lexicon Pharmaceuticals. She is passionate about science and education for all ages.
