Another version of the legend says that the letter was delivered in the cave to João Antão by a man in white robes. Presenting the letter to its former owner, as ordered by the white-robed master, João Antão would have obtained his manumission, as João Francisco Junqueira would have been very impressed by the slave's report and would have even ordered the construction of a church next to the aforementioned grotto, which today is located in what is the Center of São Tomé das Letras. It is believed that João Francisco Junqueira's son, Gabriel Francisco Junqueira, is buried under the altar of the church, the current Mother Church. The toponym's "das Letras" refers to the rock inscriptions that can still be seen in the cave where the statue of St. Thomas would have been found.
