Overwhelming Roman Force

Battlefield archaeology this week as we investigate a site in Dumfriesshire, Scotland. A site that is totally unique in Europe. Burnswark - also known as Birrenswark - is a large Iron Age hillfort, but unusually, it has two large Roman camps - including tituli - facing its northern and southern gates. Given quantities of lead slingshot and ballista canon calls found over the years, it was long assumed to have been the location of an unrecorded battle between the Romans and the native Celts. Opinions were revised back in the 60s when it was decided that we were looking at a Roman military training ground, with the fort having been abandoned. In this video, we present the arguments for and against both scenarios and provide an update based on the most recent thrilling finds.
