MANALIVE was: Steve Gaines - Lead vocals, guitar Cassie Gaines - Lead vocals & backup vocals Gary Clark - Bass Mark Marcano - Keys John "Moose" Moss - Drums & Percussion Songs: 01. Let Me Try (Boogie) [Steve Gaines] 02. Good Mornin'g [John Moss] 03. People Comin' At Me [Steve Gaines] Tracks 1-2 are from the Hotwater Records 45" vinyl singles, recorded at the famous Sun Recording Studios in Memphis, Tennessee. Track 3 is a live recording from the Steve Gaines bootleg CD, I Know a Little Live. It's also the only non-Crawdad track on the entire CD, albeit slightly sped up (so I fixed that here). All three tracks have been remastered by myself using Audacity and Bandlab. Unfortunately, they're the only three songs and recordings of Manalive that are available in some way, shape, or form. "So we {the members of Manalive} moved to Memphis in a huge brick house on Elvis Presley Boulevard. In 1971 we released a single on Hot Water Label distributed by Stax. We thought we were on our way, they were playing our record on the biggest FM stations in the South. We had a write-up in the record world magazine, 'the record is a cross between the WHO and the ROLLING STONES.' The 'A' side was a song of Steve's he and Cassie sang called 'Let Me Try'". The 'B' side was a song of mine called 'Good Morning'. 'Let Me Try' was recorded while we were jamming in the studio in one take. Everybody in the booth came running out saying 'That's It! That's It!' Everybody in the band thought it sucked with tons of mistakes - but they insisted. Our first show was with a band we never heard of but had a good following in Memphis. They had one album out - the band was ZZ TOP. We thought we would blow them away, it turned out to be a concert from hell! We had been in the studio for a couple of months and hadn't played any live gigs and were rusty. Steve broke a string during the show and had no extra guitar. He had to change the string while playing - Steve could do this better than anyone I have ever seen, never missed a note, just kept on playing. About the time we finally got the crowd on their feet his Marshall amp blew and we just faded out, a bleeping nightmare. ZZ TOP came out and jammed for two hours and blew everyone away. We left with our tails between our legs, a learning experience to say the least. We all finally decided that we needed to go back to the drawing board and moved back to Oklahoma."
