Historic Home Makeover | Bringing a 150-Year-Old House into the 21st Century

This project was personal. After restoring our own Hudson Valley home—an abandoned 1890s workers cottage—we were ready for the next challenge. That challenge came in the form of a circa-1880 home (with 1920s updates), covered in vinyl siding and overlooked for years. From 2010 to 2012, we undertook a full-service historic rehabilitation, peeling back wallpaper layers, restoring original wood clapboards and windows, rebuilding the porch, and upgrading kitchens and baths with salvaged vintage fixtures. We even followed “ghost lines” in the floors to bring back the home’s original layout. Today, the house stands as both a family gathering place and a vacation rental that we share with other old-house lovers—proof that historic preservation brings new life not only to buildings, but to communities.
