Charring wood has been used to help prevent them from rotting. I put some Douglas fir logs on my Woodmizer LT15 Sawmill and cut them into posts. I build a slash fire and use it to forge the posts with fire. It's just fun to say forge with fire for some reason. We will see how well these fire forged posts hold up to ground contact. Of course we will have to wait some years to do that. Either way, I will use these posts to fix the garden fence to keep the deer from rudely eating the garden.
