This is Part 1 of our series on the Willapa Hills Trail Chehalis WA to Southbend WA Rails to Trails . Originally, it was used as a railroad line, in the late 1800's as a spur track for logging. Later, it was used to haul freight and people between Southbend (Not far from the Pacific Ocean) and Chehalis (South of Olympia. Now on I-5). It reminds me of the Steam Train and rail line in the 1960's TV show, Petticoat Junction. The State of Washington, State Parks Service, acquired the rail line in 1993 from Burlington Northern Railroad and has transformed it from a railroad line to an amazing trail. This is a relatively flat 56 mile route traveling east to west, close to Hwy 6. The trail is in part asphalt, gravel and unimproved condition. The trail can be used for Hiking, Biking and Horseback riding. Be sure to check signs at the trailheads for legal use. There are several small towns, parks, bridges and railroad trestles along the way. From Hwy 6 you can access the trail from many trailheads.
