Hi guys! Im come back~ Today I wanna tell you about Banyuwangi local wisdom. As you know, Banyuwangi has a traditional mascot which is Gandrung. And this time I wanna tell you about the history of Gandrung to the Gandrung Sewu Festival. The Majestic Banyuwangi Banyuwangi, a city on the eastern tip of Java Island, is known as an area rich in culture, tradition, and charming natural charm. One of the most awaited cultural events and an annual icon is the Gandrung Sewu Festival. This festival not only presents a grand visual spectacle, but also holds a million philosophies about the lives of Banyuwangi people that are closely related to history, social values, and regional identity. History: This dance originated from the Osing tribe in Banyuwangi. Gandrung has a long history in the social life of Banyuwangi people. In the past, this dance was performed by male dancers known as Gandrung Lanang or marsan. However, the tradition began to transform to female dancers around the 1890s with Semi being the first recorded female dancer to begin dancing at the age of 10 around 1895. Background: The dance was originally a form of homage to Dewi Sri, the goddess of fertility in Javanese mythology, as an expression of gratitude for a bountiful harvest. Over time, the Gandrung dance evolved into more of a worship dance and the gandrung sewu festival was established for it. The Gandrung Sewu Festival has been held since 2012 and is held every September or October. Each year, the festival carries a different theme that illustrates the rich culture and history of Banyuwangi. For example, the theme "Payung Agung" displays the harmonization of the diverse cultures of the archipelago in Banyuwangi by featuring thousands of dancers who dance in unison on the shores of Boom Beach with the Bali Strait in the background. Philosophy: More than just a performing art, Gandrung depicts the harmonious relationship between man, nature and the spiritual. This dance is not only dedicated to fellow humans, but also to the universe that gives life and blessings. Every movement in Gandrung dance is not a random dance, but has a deep philosophical meaning. The soft and dynamic hand movements symbolize gratitude and respect. While the rhythmic footwork symbolizes hard work and perseverance. The dance is also a reflection of togetherness and harmony, where hundreds of dancers must move in unison and harmony, creating a symphony of beautiful movements. The festival plays an important role in preserving Banyuwangi's cultural heritage and introducing it to the world. In addition, the festival also drives the regional economy by attracting tourists and involving local artists. Overall, the Gandrung Sewu Festival is a celebration that not only showcases the beauty of dance, but also strengthens cultural identity, builds togetherness, and has a positive impact on the people of Banyuwangi.
