Acute appendicitis is an acute inflammation of the vermiform appendix. It is a very common condition in general radiology practice and is one of the main reasons for abdominal surgery in young patients. CT is the most sensitive modality to detect appendicitis. Findings on ultrasound: Aperistaltic, non-compressible, fluid-filled blind-ending structure with outer diameter of more than 6 mm. Hyperechoic appendicolith with posterior acoustic shadowing. Normal 5 layers implies non-necrotic (catarrhal appendicitis). Loss of wall stratification implies necrosis. Gas locules in appendicitis indicate gangrene.
