In 1671, the Ahom Kingdom faced an impossible choice: surrender to Emperor Aurangzeb's massive Mughal army or fight impossible odds. Led by legendary general Lachit Borphukan, the Ahom army defeated a Mughal force 10 times its size in the Battle of Saraighat—one of history's greatest underdog victories. Unlike the famous battle of Leonidas at Thermopylae, Lachit's victory was achieved through superior naval strategy, not sacrifice of his entire force. His tactical genius—choosing Saraighat as the narrowest point of the Brahmaputra River and building formidable defenses—turned the river itself into his weapon. The Battle of Saraighat marked a turning point in Indian history, preventing Mughal conquest of Assam and preserving the Ahom Kingdom's independence for 150+ more years. Every year on November 24, Assam celebrates Lachit Diwas honoring his memory. Today, the best NDA cadet receives the Lachit Borphukan Gold Medal.
