This blue and white chilong dish specimen closely follows Ming dynasty dragon imagery in its overall appearance, making it easy to misidentify at first glance. However, microscopic examination of the glaze and pigment structure reveals clear technological features consistent with the Qing dynasty. The central decoration features a single coiled chilong surrounded by cloud motifs within double concentric rings. While this compositional structure originates from Ming dynasty design conventions, it was systematically adopted and standardized during the Qing dynasty, particularly from the late Kangxi to early Qianlong periods. The chilong form here appears more decorative and regulated, with controlled line work rather than the expressive brush quality typical of genuine Ming examples. Microscopic analysis shows a dense and evenly distributed population of fine glaze bubbles, indicating a stable and mature high-temperature firing system characteristic of Qing porcelain. The cobalt pigment displays a grayish-blue tone with a distinct pigment core and soft diffusion, lacking the iron-rich speckling and burnt edges commonly associated with early Ming cobalt sources. The glaze surface is smooth and glassy, with a well-integrated body-glaze interface. Based on stylistic analysis and microscopic evidence, this specimen is best dated to the mid Qing dynasty, likely from the late Kangxi to early Yongzheng or Qianlong period. It represents a classic example of Qing dynasty porcelain that consciously emulates Ming visual language while reflecting later technological advancements.
