Residents and protesters speak out after gas is deployed at Portland ICE facility - Full Package

After gas was deployed against protesters outside the Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in South Portland over the weekend, KATU is digging into how the implementation of a city ordinance passed in December gives officials the authority to crack down on the use of chemical munitions there. The legislation gives Portlanders the ability to report nuisances outside of detention facilities, such as the ICE facility. In theory, if there is a nuisance, the facility could be fined. Dr. Catherine Esperanza says she was demonstrating outside the ICE facility Sunday when she says she was struck by a canister. “I was wearing jeans, and it managed to rip through the pants,” Esperanza said.
