LIVE: Taiwan Holds Fire Drills on Penghu Island Days after China's War Games | South-China Sea Taiwan's military staged night-time live fire drills with battle tanks on the Penghu Islands on Thursday (October 24) to test combat readiness. Using M60A3 main battle tanks, the military practised repelling an assault from the sea at night. Penghu is home to the navy and an important air base from which Taiwanese air force jets regularly scramble to shadow Chinese military aircraft and warships operating around Taiwan. The drills in Taiwan are part of the annual Chen Chiang exercise, which came after China earlier this week conducted live fire drills around Niushan island in Fujian province, which sits just south of the Taiwan-controlled Matsu islands. The military exercises coincide with the anniversary of China-Taiwan battle over Kinmen island.
