On July 29, 2025, a magnitude 8.7 earthquake struck east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia, along the Kuril-Kamchatka subduction zone. The quake occurred as a result of shallow reverse faulting where the Pacific Plate converges with the North American Plate at ~77 mm/yr. This powerful earthquake triggered a Tsunami Warning for Hawaii, with the first waves expected at 7:17 PM HST.
