In this feature we spotlight 5 of the most iconic eyewear of the rock era: Here is my Eyewear fiver: #5 We’re going to Starting off with John Lennon’s famous orange tinted spectacles with photo chromatic glass- a lens that reacts to light and dark surroundings. John wore these glasses in 1971 when he recorded his second studio album Imagine, highlighted by his timeless title track “Imagine.” Lennon was very near nighted, and was initially reluctant to wear glasses, but his varied styles of eyewear, including his artsy sunglasses, was a big part of his signature look. #4- Janis Joplin’s tinted pink tea shades. Janis’s choice of eyewear that she donned in the late 60s, was bold & outlandish for its time, but it has since become a hallmark of the retro/ hippie look that is still massive today. #3- Frank Sinatra once called Ray Charles “the only genius in our business.” That’s interesting a Genius calling a Genius a Genius Ray was a genius, and he didn’t let his blindness stop him from becoming one of the most influential artists of the Rock Era. Ray’s introduced his trademark dark framed, dark lens glasses when he was just 18 years old. He had just moved to Seattle, and started a band with his friends called the McSon Trio. The trio developed publicity photos for the group, but before the images were printed, an artist retouched the photos, and painted sunglasses over Ray’s sightless eyes. Following the rendering, Ray began wearing his iconic sunglasses during his live performances. #2-Elton John is notorious for his outlandish stage costumes and his glasses were a big part of his crafted iconic image that ignited his legend worldwide. Elton has rocked hundreds of different styles and colors of eyewear over his prolific career, But, his so-called 'Bennie and the Jets' glasses from 1973 were perhaps his most recognizable. ________ #1- One of the true pioneers for Rock n’ Roll, Buddy Hollly, had 20/800 vision, and couldn’t read the top line of the eye chart when he was a boy. He could’ve been labeled as legally blind.
