Oberjoch's claim to fame is that it is one of the highest tourist resorts in Germany with a number of ski lifts and pistes - and plenty of parking for those coming in by vehicle. As for me, I stayed at the nearby Camping Jungholz in the Austrian exclave of Jungholz and travelled to the region by bus - but I did walk back! In bygone times it was a wealthy area because of the nearby mountain passes and the trade which came through it, above all salt. However as new routes were opened through the mountains and new salt deposits discovered the area became poorer, particularly in view of the unsuitability of the area for anything other than self sufficiency agriculture. In the interwar period, the Oberjoch was 'discovered' by mountaineers and tourism was the main growth vehicle since the end of WW2. There is a bus service but the frequency is around one per two hours or so which is the reason why you see me walking back in the accompanying film.
