Bophuthatswana was one of only two homelands which used to have an own national anthem (the other one was Venda, whose anthem was entitled "Pfano na vhuthihi"). All other homelands used the famous "Nkosi sikelel´i Afrika" as their anthem: According to an information by the international broadcasting service of the "Voice of South Africa" in the 80s, "Nkosi sikelel´i Afrika" was officially used in Ciskei and Transkei (the area from where it originated), but also (probably in some cases on an unofficial basis) in those homelands who had refused to become "independent": KwaZulu, Lebowa, QwaQwa, Ganzankulu, KaNgwane and KwaNdebele. According to Ulrich Ragozat, the music of "Lefatshe leno la bo-rrarona" was composed by E.B. Mathibe, who was assisted by J.J. Loots, a former music inspector in the South African Ministry for Education. Author of the text in Setswana language was J.M. Ntsime, who later held the position of a secretary in the Ministry for Education of Bophuthatswana.
