Dungeness 5 lighthouse was built in 1961 and incorporated at the top 60 built in fog signal emitters. These had previously been tested on site at the near by Experimental Station (there is still a Tannoy fog signal there consisting of six large units. I never heard these in operation and closer inpectin show only the wires were cut at the back so easily soundable with the right amount of power). Tannoy was the company who provided the units, hense the name. There was an alternator at the base of the tower which provided ac power for the Tannoy, although I do have a recording of it, it is just a quiet hum. As you'll hear, Dungeness 5 had a fog horn character of 3 blasts every 60 seconds. That continued after the Tannoy was decomissioned in the late 1990s and replaced with a Honeywell 300hz emitter. In 2022, that was also replaced with a much quieter, high pitched emitter and character changed to 1 blast every 30 seconds. It gets plenty of useage. The Tannoy's have since been removed and the openings plated over. This recording was taken from the base of the tower. No echo can be heard as is often the case with fog. The Tannoy horns at Tater Du, Anvil Point, Lunmouth Foreland, South Bishop and Strumble Head sounded very similar. St Anne's, South Stack, Lundy North and Bardsey had Tannoy's but produced a much sharper note. Tannoys were also installed at St Bees and North Stack but I never heard these. All pictures on this video are my own, taken over the years on many visits to delightful Dungeness.
