PGA Professional Robin Symes demonstrates a great drill for anyone who has lost the feeling of their swing, it will get the natural flow back to your swing developing a feel for tempo, timing, weight transfer and dynamics. Transcript Hi, Robin Symes here. I want to show you one of my favorite drills, the Windmill drill. It's a great drill to give you the overall feeling of your golf swing. Start by taking a Five Iron address with your arms out parallel to the ground. I'll take you through it in a step by step process first. Start by adding some momentum to your arms, so your shoulders start to rotate around your spine. In doing that keep your lower body stable. You'll feel a separation between your upper body and your lower body if you're doing it correctly. That's the same sequence you start your golf swing with; the golf swing starts with the club first, then your arms, then your shoulders, and as your shoulders are rotating that's working down. That rotation's working down through your body into your hips, so the last thing to move should be your hips and it's exactly the same in the drill. So the hips will finish the backswing. If you're doing it correctly you should maybe feel a little bit of weight shift into your right heel. Now, here's a real key part of this exercise: your left arm will be pointing roughly toward where the ball will be, and your right arm will be pointed toward the sky. I want you to keep your arms in this position as you rotate your lower body and shift your weight to your left foot. This will be ensuring that you've got a good transition and you're separating your lower body from your upper body once again. Now, that hip rotation will then trigger the downswing, your shoulders will follow, and your arms will follow that shoulder rotation. On impact your right arm will be pointing where the ball would be and your left arm will be pointing toward the sky. So, let's add some motion to that; the tempo should be the same as you're going to hit a shot with. Three or four swings of the arms to get the move away sequence and then it's one continual movement. I love this drill for people who have lost the feeling of their golf swing, the natural motion. It's the right drill to teach you the sequence of the swing and backswing and downswing. We get a feeling for weight shift and a feeling for motion and dynamics. Repeat the drill maybe five times at the driving range, pick up the club, and repeat the feeling while you're hitting the shot.
