Tetanus is an infection that is caused by the Clostridium tetani bacteria that invades the body and produces toxins that result in painful muscle contractions. You may have also heard tetanus referred to as lockjaw because it often causes the patient's neck and jaw muscles to stiffen, making it difficult to open the mouth or swallow. Some of the most common ways that the tetanus bacteria can get into your body is by puncture wounds, burns, and injuries with dead tissue. Any injury where there is a break in the skin could result in a tetanus infection in those who are not vaccinated. This is why the CDC recommends vaccines for infants, children, teens, and adults to prevent this infection from occurring. ➡️ Tetanus Complications Some serious health problem and complications can happen because of tetanus, including the following: Laryngospasm Broken bones Pulmonary embolism Pneumonia Difficulty breathing ➡️ Tetanus and RT's This is why it's important for Respiratory Therapists to be familiar with this condition because it often results in breathing and respiratory issues. Tetanus is considered to be a medical emergency but it can be treated with hospital care, wound care, antibiotics, and medications to control muscle spasms. Patients will also require immediate treatment with a medication called human tetanus immune globulin (TIG).
