By 2050, it's projected that 152 million people will be living with dementia. The Lancet Commission published a comprehensive review in 2020 defining 12 modifiable risk factors (less early life education, hearing loss, TBI, hypertension, increased alcohol use, obesity, smoking, depression, social isolation, physical inactivity, air pollution, and diabetes) that are responsible for 40% of dementia cases. In other words, if we take action to reduce or eliminate these risk factors, there is the potential that nearly 61 million people could be spared from having dementia in the next 25 years. This video reviews how pickleball is an easy and fun way to be physically active -- it's a sport that could address 4 of these risk factors (accounting for 12% of cases). And, with the added bonus of honing reaction time and hand-eye coordination, it stimulates production of brain-derived neurotrophic factor, BDNF, which is a key protein for neuroplasticity and memory.
