The Underground City of Naours

The village of Naours itself boasts remarkable cob architecture, but is mainly renowned for the incredible network of caves dug out of the limestone of the neighbouring plateau. These shelters, many of which can be seen in Picardy and part of the Artois area, are called creuttes, boves or muches, meaning hideout in the local dialect. The underground city could take in 3 000 people with their livestock and has 2km of roads, squares, 300 rooms, three chapels, cowsheds and a bakery with ovens. Cité Souterraine de Naours is an underground city that is absolutely incredible – at 33m below ground level it covers more than 2km with 300 rooms and 28 galleries.
