Southern Italy's Basilicata area includes the city of Matera Italy. Its original settlement is located in two gorges carved out by the Gravina River, and it serves as the provincial capital of Matera. The Sassi di Matera is a collection of cave settlements formed out of an old river canyon. Matera has captured the imagination of numerous artists, like Carlo Levi and Giovanni Pascoli, and continues to fascinate with its Sassi, a World Heritage Site. It is a location rich in beauty, distinctive architectural works, and views of exquisite appeal. It enthralls the heart and is deserving of a lengthy stay. The city of Matera's Sassi, or "the stones of Matera," is a special place that has traces of human habitation dating from the Paleolithic to the present. The pearl of Basilicata is deserving of being seen at least once in a lifetime because it has a history spanning thousands of years, numerous attractions, and a rich and delectable cuisine of low provenance. The town center, or civita, and the neighboring sassi cliffs make up Matera. Highlights of the trek, which occasionally involves steep ups and downs, include the breathtaking views, particularly from the national park, Parco della Murgia Materana. From the highest point of Civita hill, Santa Maria della Bruna Cathedral, built of tufa stone in the thirteenth century, towers over the Sassi. Its interior is adorned with stucco, paintings, gilded frames, and sculptures, all in the baroque style.
