MODERATOR Bronac Ferran Q&A section: these quesions were submitted online but we ran out of time. Please see Anna's answers below. B. Bogart: What are your reflections on extractivism through yoour work? Do you lean into the norms of collection for the sake of itself (collection as moral because of the seatch for truth), or are there ways your practise challenges collection? (collection of data, of stories, of life, plant bacteria, etc.) Anna: I work with data in some cases, but usually the data is collected by my collaborators who have undertaken stringent ethics processes in terms of how they use that data and the significant benefits of the results. For example in "Susceptible" the work raises awareness of global TB data that enhances prescribing regimes for antibiotic use so patients receive more targeted treatments. Other works such as "The Birth of Snowflakes" directly reference bioprospecting practices and issues around extractivism and I recently did a talk related to this in Rome https://www.chimica404.it/sensibilizz..., a collaborative paper is under peer review now. Some of my robotic works explore data collection and how it might be used to raise awareness of the ethical risks. I've also written a book on the ethical implications of artists in labs. https://annadumitriu.co.uk/portfolio/... Colin Sanderson, writing from Edinburgh, where we have some good items from the library of C. H. Waddington in the Artiscience Library. I am wondering on whose work on the possible epigenetic inheritance of trauma you have most profited, Anna. As you speak, I am looking at a paper by Rachel Yehuda and Amy Lehrner, NY (2018). How strong do you think the evidence is for such inheritance? Anna: Hi Colin, We've met before when I visited Edinburgh! The research this direction comes from the Institute of Epigenetics and Stem Cells at the Helmholtz Zentrum and we talked about Rachel Yehuda and Amy Lehrner's work and others. Rachel and I published a paper that goes into more detail for Leonardo Journal https://direct.mit.edu/leon/article-a... Event Organiser / Web: Geoff Davis CAS Video: Alex May
