The University of the Philippines, Diliman, Marine Science Institute runs a giant clam breeding program in Bolinao, in the Pangasinan province of the Philippines. The clams are bred here and used as a stock to repopulate stressed populations all over the Philippines. The clams gain energy by filter feeding plankton and from the symbiotic algae living in their tissues. Irridescent cells called iridocytes funnel light to the algae. The stunning colors of the clams are mainly due to the colors of their symbiotic algae. Giant clams can bleach, just like corals, when they lose their symbiotic unicellular algae. The bleaching can be reversed, and the clam can recover. UP scientists seen here take small mantle samples to study the clams and the symbiotic algae living in the clam's tissues. Interestingly, many animals use the giant clams as homes, like this cardinalfishes, the small toby and the seastar. Narration by Glaiza Abril.
