First off, your wheels collect a significant amount contamination and dirt that you don’t want to transfer onto your paint. For example, brake dust, railroad dust, salts and chemicals from the roads like to deposit on your wheels, so don’t help them transfer onto your clear coat. Ever notice those little orange rust spots on white cars? Those are little iron particles that fling onto your car, which stick and embed into your paintwork. Some can come from the road, but a lot of them are coming from your wheels. There’s also gunk or grease that is hardening on the inside of your wheels and regular soap just won’t remove it. When looking for a wheel cleaner, there’s a few reasons I went with Meguiar’s. First, Meguiar’s Ultimate wheel cleaner is safe for all wheel finishes and despite it being a dedicated wheel cleaner, it can also be used to clean tires. I also like that it color activates when it decontaminates iron and brake dust, like a visual aid for how dirty my wheels are. For a tire cleaner I’m using an all-purpose cleaner, P21s Total Auto Wash. This is a great APC to use on tires if you plan to apply any tire dressing or tire shine when finished. It terms of wheel protectant, Carpro, HydrO2, is a silica spray that works like a charm. Lastly the tire dressing or shine. This water-based dressing called VRP from chemical guys is awesome and is dry to touch, not greasy or oily. Cleaning your wheels Like the engine bay, do the wheels before washing the exterior of the car. With Meguiar’s Ultimate Wheel Cleaner, it recommends that you spray it on a dry wheel. Shake the bottle first and do one wheel at a time because you do not want this product to dry. You could just spray this on, let it sit for 4 mins and rinse off, but with some agitation with a brush you will get better results. After it sits for a about a 2-4 mins, use the boar hairbrush to gently agitate or clean the face of the rims. Boar hair bristles are very soft and durable, great for protecting the finish on the face of your wheels, but you can also use a synthetic soft brush if you can’t find a boar hairbrush. Use the long soft brush to get in deep in the barrel and clean between the spokes, brake calipers, and discs. Make sure the bristles are on the softer side to avoid scratches. Now for the tire cleaning, you can use Meguiar’s cleaner, even thought it says it’s just for wheels. I use P21s total auto wash APC. Use a stiff bristled brush to clean the tire. Spray a bit on the brush then directly on the wheel, then scrub. Rinse it all off thoroughly. Make sure you’re tires are clean before you do this. Don’t just apply dressing on top of old dressing. It won’t stick properly and will just fling onto your car. I find petroleum based products fling on the side of the car even with letting it cure for a full 24 hrs. I use VRP, its water based and low sheen. Protect your wheels To protect your rims after the wash, you can use a silica spray, like this one from Carpro Hydro O2, it can protect the rims from dust collecting and avoid water spots. You just spray a few times after the wheels have been washed and rinsed, let it sit for 10- 15 seconds and rinse off. Water will bead right off immediately, and now you are further protecting the rims from brake dust or road grime sticking.
