Welcome to the Corona Virus Chronicles... Tim is now self-isolating, and presenting his videos directly from his apartment, via a web link. As a branch of topology, it is also of interest to people who are into puzzles, and Tim has a few examples of braiding, or plaiting, in his extensive collection of toys and puzzles. While braiding often involves combining separate strands together, it is also possible to create a plait when both ends are joined together. Tim demonstrates a strip of leather that has had two cuts made in it, so that most of the length is in three strips, but they combine at each end, back into a single piece. However it is possible to braid this, by folding it through itself several times. Very clever. Normally, to create a braid, you need an odd number of strands, 3 maybe, or 5 strands. If you use an even number, you get one strand that gets left over, as it were. However, interestingly, Tim has a little newspaper clipping that talks about a surgeon having to repair an anterior cruciate ligament (in the knee - this is the ligament that football players sometimes damage) using a four stranded plait, a tendon graft. However, it seems that it is also possible to use a five stranded tendon graft now, as well - https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/arti...
