January 1 - Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God

On the first day of the new year, the Church celebrates not a simple feast, but the most important Solemnity of the Christmas Season: Mary, the Holy Mother of God (Theotokos). This title, proclaimed at the Council of Ephesus (431), is the foundation of all honors to Our Lady. In it, we confess that Jesus, the Child of Bethlehem, is true God, and that Mary, in giving Him human birth, is truly the Mother of God. It is also World Day of Peace. Let us place the new year under the mantle and intercession of She who bore the Prince of Peace.
