(29 Oct 1995) Natural Sound Approximately four-hundred Canadian soldiers are being flown home from Split in Croatia as part of the overall UN troop reduction in the former Yugoslavia. The Canadian contingent of UNPROFOR - known as "Canbat 2" - has been based at Visoko and Kiseljak for the duration of its six-month peace keeping tour. It is now returning to base near Quebec City. The soldiers seemed happy as they checked in their luggage and passed through customs homeward bound. The first group were seen boarding planes home while a "rear party" of around 200 soldiers will remain in Croatia until the end of November. With dramatic changes to the situation in Bosnia, the U-N has said it no longer needs the number of troops originally authorised - so repatriation can begin. Canada will continue to have a presence in Bosnia both at headquarters in Zagreb and NATO operations in the Adriatic. Canadian soldiers have been in Bosnia for three years, supporting activities such as the delivery of humanitarian aid and monitoring cease-fire lines.
