There is always discussion about whether some copies of the same lens are better than others. How much variation is there between different copies of a lens? I set out to measure the overall sharpness, center sharpness, and corner sharpness of three copies of the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm F/1.8 G prime lens. I compared the three lenses at an F-stop of 4.5 and discovered that at that aperture, my three lenses are very different. Furthermore, it seems that the corner sharpness is what makes most of the difference. I call my best lens a cherry and the worst lens a lemon, while the middle one is an apple. I should emphasize that I tested just one F-stop here (F4.5), the one I use a lot in my own photography. I will soon have a video (check the links) where I study the sharpness of these lenses even further. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- *** If you like this video, please consider SUBSCRIBING to my channel ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LINKS: How to measure lens and photo sharpness: • A quick method for measuring sharpness of ...
