Canadian folk-hippie legends The Perth County Conspiracy recorded their final album 'Kanada' (a.k.a. 'Break Out To Berlin') behind the Iron Curtain in East Berlin in February 1975. The album was recorded in several sessions over a three-day period, following the group's appearance at the 'Fifth Annual Festival of Political Song', where many (communist and predominantly state-sponsored) bands from the Eastern bloc and other countries gathered from across the world. With statewide broadcast of the festival providing advertising, the final PCC album reportedly sold upwards of 80,000 copies in the Soviet bloc. Whether or not that figure is true, it certainly stands as one of the band's best efforts, and it was cut with an audiophile-level quality of high fidelity. Since the album has never been reissued on CD, here is what the original AMIGA pressing sounds like. // LYRICS (Cedric Smith/Milton Acorn): The dance of the fat on the lives of the thin What of the spirit so terribly dim in the western sky But we've got electric knives now to cut up the turkey We can streak to the moon in a silvery penis Oh, there's nothing between us But them down there Them down there Oh, I once was a boy on the streets of Hanoi When the bandit spoke French and drank cognac But now in the sky the Yankee flies high In machines of the corporate leeches Just seeing how far it reaches Oh, but wheat sales will mellow The perils of yellow Surely Mao would be more content Sipping Coke in a New York bordello Learning to be just one of the regular fellows So put down your sword and pick up a razor In a choice of six colors and nine shaving edges But nothing so sharp as the scalpel Cutting the tumor away And so many things cry out to be done All so urgently, the world rolls on So many things cry out to be done All so urgently, the world rolls on You growing and your thought threading the delicate strength of your focus, out of a clamour of voices, demanding faces and noises, Wherever you are be fearless and wherever I am I hope to know that you're moving vivid beyond me, and so I grow by the strength of you fighting for your self, your life. Many lives.
