Isaiah is probably the best-known of Old Testament prophets, arguably the most influential and most quoted in the New Testament, and provides the best insights into contemporary political, social and religious circumstances in the Israel of his day. He lived from the mid seventh century BC well into the sixth century, and during the years of his prophetic activity five and possibly six kings reigned in the southern kingdom of Judah. Isaiah dealt with themes of the sovereignty of God, the justice of God which would mete out punishment for sin, the mercy of God that provided hope for His people after the time of their chastisement ended and the promise of a coming Messiah. He wrote of the importance of social justice, the evil of empty, hypocritical worship, and the coming of a day of the Lord that would bring about righteousness and punish evil. The Geneva class will study the text of approximately five chapters each Sunday with emphasis on the effectiveness of the Hebrew poetic literary form which Isaiah uses extensively.
