Bach: “Die Seele ruht in Jesu Händen” (“The Soul Rests in Jesus’ Hands”) Aria from Cantata BWV 127 ("Herr Jesu Christ, wahr’ Mensch und Gott") Composed in Leipzig in 1725 for the last Sunday before Lent, this cantata belongs among Bach’s most profound meditations on mortality and consolation, music suspended between this world and the next. The aria “Die Seele ruht in Jesu Händen” forms the spiritual center of the work. The transcription heard here is by Harold Bauer (1873–1951), a pupil of Jan Paderewski and one of the great poet-pianists of the early 20th century, renowned for his warm, singing tone.
