Neoprene rubber was the first oil and gas-resistant synthetic rubber that was invented. At the time of its invention, rubber was a growing commodity so many countries were looking to create a new synthetic version of rubber that will be more durable and resistant to oils and gases. Today, neoprene material is used in a variety of settings including industrial and automotive industries. Neoprene rubber is a versatile material that is popularly used in industrial environments and are used to create oil and gas-resistant gaskets and seals. Neoprene rubber sheets are resistant to most industrial oil compounds and is commonly used to replace natural rubber in applications involving oil and petroleum products. Natural rubber is prone to breaking down upon contact with oil and gas, but neoprene sheets are able to withstand these materials and will last longer under these circumstances. Due to the petrochemicals and chlorine found within neoprene’s composition, rubber neoprene rolls are able to resist the damaging effects of industrial oils. The inclusion of a chlorine atom in its structure can increase the resistance properties of neoprene. Oil resistance is greatly improved with the addition of chlorine in neoprene’s chemical structure. Other rubber materials, even synthetic rubber such as EPDM, are not resistant to oil and will deteriorate when coming into contact with oils and gases. Other rubber materials will eventually absorb the oil causing it to swell and lose its durability in an application. This can lead to malfunctions which can cause hazards in the workplace. Due to these oil-resistant properties, neoprene rubber sheets are popular materials used for oil-based industrial applications.
