Hello Detroit! [A Love Letter to The City] by Vanessa Carr

Hello Stars and Champions! My name is Vanessa Carr. A few years ago, my friend and nationally recognized cinematographer, Jim Schmelzer, and I embarked on a mission to create a music video that celebrates our beautiful city. The song featured in this salute to the Motor City is an iconic masterpiece originally recorded in the 80s by Sammy Davis Jr. and written by Motown's own Berry Gordy and Willie Hutch. I have always loved this Detroit anthem, so much so that I was compelled to step into the studio and record my version. From there, Jim and I filmed at over 50 downtown Detroit landmarks. This vibrant and energetic work of art beautifully celebrates and depicts the spirit of the city and its people, both residents and visitors. On May 30th, 2024, we premiered this video at a Gleaners Community Food Bank benefit concert at Aretha's Jazz Café in downtown. Sadly, Jim wasn’t there to premiere it with me as he passed away suddenly just last year. He and I were very excited and proud to share it with you, and I wish we could have done it together. However, Jim's artistic legacy lives as his passion for creating this project explodes through the screen in every frame. Viewers can feel it too as the response to creative endeavor was more than I could have ever expected. Hello Detroit received overwhelmingly enthusiastic reviews from concert guests. Thank you to everyone who was a part of this effort. Thank you to all the iconic Detroit landmarks, organizations, charities, and people who graciously joined us for the making of this feature.
