However, the objective is the same – you want to reduce the signals that you give your opponents around the Texas Holdem Poker table. Those signals are called Tells in poker. And though experienced players have learned how to reduce the number of them that they send out to their opponents during a game, no one, Paul Phua thinks, manages to eliminate them completely. He thinks there are always things you can read from other players. However, one of the hardest things to work out when you are a beginner at poker are how to recognise those signals, those tells, that other players are sending out. When you start playing Texas Holdem poker as a beginner, you tend to just concentrate on your own game, and the cards on the table. Paul Phua thinks you don’t look at other players enough. Especially their behaviour. Paul thinks that is a mistake. Even the best players he thinks find it very hard, in some shape or form, not to give away signals to their opponents. Those might be about how they are feeling, how happy or sad they are about the cards they have been dealt, and how optimistic or pessimistic they are about how the hand will unfold. These signals are called tells simply because they tell you information about precisely all these things, whether the player intends to or not. What might those tells be? Some poker players find it hard to control their muscles around the mouth and cheeks. With other players it’s their eyes that can’t lie. Some players speed up, or slow down, depending on what cards they have or the situation in the game. But these tells aren’t easy to spot, and you have to concentrate and devote enough time to be able to observe them. Some players are successful in not giving away tells when they are fresh at the table. However, Paul Phua says that even those players will drop their guard when they get tired. Be patient, he says, and they will start to reveal information to you. So Paul’s advice is this. Spend as much time looking at other people around the poker table as you do at the cards themselves. Do that and you’ll have more information on how to maximise your chances in Texas Holdem. Study Paul’s video on how to get better at reading your opponents’ Poker Tells. Common poker tells One of the mistakes most amateur players make, is when they are bluffing at the river they try to over emphasise their actions. They try to put their chips in with a bit more energy, a bit more noisily!! Usually in those cases they have a very bad hand. They try to be too deliberate. Most of the time they are bluffing!! I have won a lot of money that way!! I play a lot against players who sigh when they have a very good hand!! The river comes, they sigh, and then they make a big bet. Maybe 20% of bad players do that a lot!! Why do they sigh? They want to make you think, “oh dear, I have a bad hand”!! Mouth expressions. A lot of players don’t realise it but they make a small movement at the side of their mouth! That’s another common tell. When it is your opponent’s turn, it is very important to look at him for a good period before they make their move. You need to watch their decision process, not just their action. A lot of amateur players don’t look at their opponents when they are deciding what to do. There are some players who don’t move at all. They are like statues or robots! But even those players can get tired eventually, especially in long games. Then you can get some tells from them. Maybe they start to call faster with top pair, than when they are fresh and composed.
