🌫️ Field Notes – Cheesman Canyon: One fish is worth five. Fly fishing Cheesman Canyon on the South Platte River during the first below-freezing morning of the season. Cold air, light cloud cover, and cinematic canyon light made for a quiet, technical day on one of Colorado’s most demanding stretches of water. Cold enough to sting the hands at first light, with light cloud cover hanging over the canyon and occasional sun slipping through the rock walls. As the day went on, things slowly warmed up, but the morning carried that sharp, quiet edge that only shows up when winter starts creeping in. Cheesman has always stood out to me for the rock formations alone — massive, sculpted, and timeless. There’s an old saying that if you can catch one fish at Cheesman, it’s worth five anywhere else. Today felt like proof of that. 🎬 Field Notes — Cheesman Canyon Not every day here is generous, but every day demands your full attention. 👁️ What stood out: The canyon itself. Towering rock faces, narrow water, and a sense that you’re fishing inside something ancient. Cheesman doesn’t let you forget where you are. 🌬️ What challenged me: Cold morning temperatures and technical water. Every cast felt earned, and mistakes were punished quickly. 🎣 What worked: A purple hopper. Unexpected for the conditions, but it fooled a solid rainbow and turned the day around. 🪶 What surprised me: Landing a rainbow on a hopper in below-freezing conditions wasn’t on the plan, but that’s Cheesman for you. 🔧 Gear realization: This was the day I finally admitted it — my old $100 fly rod just isn’t cutting it for throwing streamers anymore. Time to step up to a proper streamer setup. 🎵 Music note: This episode marks the shift away from Adobe Stock music. From here on out, I’m using Artlist — a move that already feels more aligned with the pacing and mood these films are settling into. 🗓️ Context: This was filmed before my November trip to Japan — one of those projects that sat quietly, waiting for the right moment to surface. 🗺️ What’s next: Another episode coming soon from the Big Thompson River near Estes Park, Colorado. ▪️ Location: Cheesman Canyon, Colorado ▪️ Fishing: Purple hopper ▪️ Trail Partner: Solo trip ▪️ Gear: Sony A7III, GoPro Hero 11, DJI Mini 3, Manfrotto tripod & 501HDV head, SmallRig cage & arm, RAM ball mounts, NEEWER V-mount quick release, NEEWER ND2–32 filter, K&F Concept GoPro polarizer, RØDE NTG shotgun mic, Black Rapid strap, West Slope pack, Patagonia waders, Orvis Clearwater rod, Lamson Liquid Reel, Scientific Anglers line, GERBER multitool, Loon Outdoors, Shimazaki Dry Shake, Jeep, Umpqua Feather Merchants, SanDisk, ZG Cine cables, Western Digital, LaCie, Lexar, Costa sunglasses, Chums, BenQ ▪️ Takeaway: At Cheesman, even one fish feels earned — and sometimes, that’s more than enough.
