(25 Mar 1997) Spanish/Nat The Chipaya community of Bolivia, one the oldest inhabitants of Latin America, have been displaced by floods in the center of the country during January and February. Their houses, crops and herds have been destroyed and they are struggling to survive in a camp a hundred kilometres from their land. But lack of nutrition is threatening their future. Circular houses like these were one of the unique characteristics of the Chipayas. They lived off fishing, hunting and growing "quinua" a grain they eat. Their music and their culture are centuries old but all that is now threatened for the Chipayas have been forced to leave the land of their ancestors. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) "Their origin goes back to the beginning of Latin America. Q: Do you know how many years? "Nobody knows. There are talks of 20 or 30-thousand years ago, there were people in this area and they are the first inhabitants." SUPER CAPTION: Gilbert Pawels, anthropologist Floods in an area of 15-hundred square kilometres in central Bolivia destroyed all their crops and their houses and killed all their cattle. SOUNDBITE (Pukina, indigenous language) "My house fell. I'm very sad because my quinua crop was lost." SUPER CAPTION: Rosenda Liparavi, (crying) The new camp site is a hundred kilometres away from their land. They get some help from the local government and international charities, but anthropologists fear the community will disappear. Some young leaders, however, insist they will survive and keep their traditions. SOUNDBITE (Broken Spanish) Q: Are you going to build your little houses as they were? A: Yes, we will build them because we don't want to lose our culture." SUPER CAPTION: Jacinto Alcaribe SOUNDBITE (Spanish chant) "I want a place like this mountain, my government, I want land. I want land to build a house." SUPER CAPTION: Ruperto Ojalve, Chief Their only hope is to get some new land where they will be able to settle and start it all over again.
