A playthrough of Midway's 1998 versus-fighting game for the Sony PlayStation, Mortal Kombat 4. Played through the Master II tower as Johnny Cage on the default difficulty level. For a fun extra, at the end of the video I picked the James Bond version of Johnny Cage to show his gun weapon, as well as the stage fatalities that I don't get to show off during the playthrough. I've always really liked Mortal Kombat 4. I think I'd probably call it my favorite of the 90s Mortal Kombats. Don't get me wrong, I like all of them (some more than others), but this one felt like a return to the series' roots. All the goofy stuff from 2 and 3 was stripped out, and it was generally a lot bloodier. For me, the biggest improvement this one brought to the series was the combo system. I really was not a fan at all of the dial-a-combo system used in MK3. This once requires split second timing too, but the timing seems to make more sense - you key in the moves as they happen, rather than just tapping in a series and then watching the animation play out. It's also a whole lot more fluid than the first two, which I would guess come from the benefits of smoothly animated 3D characters. Finally, the PlayStation port of it is pretty good. It's definitely weaker than the N64 version, but that doesn't hurt it too much. It's not as smooth and as fluid and the texture quality took a fair hit, but it does make an effort to compensate for that and the CD loading times with new FMV clips for the introduction and character endings. _____ No cheats were used during the recording of this video.
