A conversation with Ada Ferrer, Julius Silver Professor of Latin American and Caribbean History at New York University, on the occasion of the publication of 'Cuba: An American History.' Ferrer discusses how José Marti and other Cuban revolutionary thinkers envisioned democracy as they struggled against colonialism and grappled with race, empire, and the legacies of slavery on the island and in the Americas.
