Thailand closed its entire border with Cambodia as the two countries exchanged fire across their disputed frontier on Thursday, with at least 12 people being killed in the crossfire. Weeks of deteriorating relations broke out into open conflict in a contested border area known as the Emerald Triangle, where the borders of both countries and Laos meet and which is home to several ancient temples. Prompted by an initial clash around 8.30am local time between soldiers deployed near the Ta Muen Thom temple, a 1,000-year-old Khmer Hindu ruin, attacks spread to six locations along the 500-mile shared border. Cambodian forces launched rockets from army vehicles while Thailand carried out air strikes across the border with F-16 jets, with the two sides accusing each other of provocations and shooting first.
