Welcome to the one-year update of my 40-gallon (150-liter) planted community aquarium! In this video, I’m sharing a full recap of the tank’s journey—from initial setup and planting, to algae battles, breeding fish, and how the scape has evolved over time. Whether you’re planning your own planted tank or just enjoy aquarium content, I hope this video gives you some helpful tips and inspiration. 🪨 Tank Setup The tank started with Fluval Stratum aquasoil and a spider wood hardscape secured with glue and lava rock. I cycled the aquarium using the dark start method, which helped build up beneficial bacteria before introducing livestock. A bit of Seiryu stone helped keep things grounded once parts of the hardscape started floating. 🌿 Planting Choices Used Over The Year Echinodorus (Reni, Red Diamond, Aquartica, Cordifolius Fluitans) Java Fern and Anubias for hardscape attachment Bucephalandra Kedegang for finer detail Helanthium tenellum 'Green' for carpeting Rotala Rotundifolia and Ludwigia Mini Super Red as background stem plants Floating plants like Salvinia, Duckweed, and Water Lettuce Even Pothos for nutrient export! If you're new to planted aquariums, I highly recommend starting with Anubias and Rotala—both are easy, hardy, and beautiful. 🦐 Shrimp and Snails To manage algae, I introduced Amano shrimp, orange Neocaridina, and horned nerite snails. Over time, I lost a few Neos (orange lines seem more fragile in my experience), so I added some cherry and yellow shrimp to boost the colony. They’ve been breeding steadily and help keep the tank clean. 🐠 Fish Stocking The tank currently houses: Pearl Gourami (replaced later by peaceful Honey Gourami) Harlequin Rasboras Cardinal and Neon Tetras Albino Corydoras Chili Rasboras One Siamese Algae Eater Most fish have been thriving, and I’ve even observed breeding behavior from the Pearl Gourami, Corydoras, and Harlequin Rasboras. ⚠️ Challenges The biggest issue? Black beard algae. After testing water parameters, I found my phosphate levels were unusually high. The culprit? A dirty Fluval FX2 filter. Once cleaned, the algae slowly faded. I also dealt with potassium deficiencies in my Java Fern—adding spinach and liquid potassium dosing helped fix it. 🔄 Current State & Future Plans The tank has grown into a lush, overgrown jungle—and honestly, I love it. But I’m planning a mini rescape soon: removing some stem plants and replacing them with Crypts and red-toned Echinodorus to open up the space and reduce maintenance. I’m also considering hatching some Corydoras eggs in a separate tub—just to try raising a few fry without interference from the Siamese Algae Eater. Thanks so much for watching and following along on this tank’s journey. If you enjoyed the video, consider subscribing for more planted tank content. I’ll definitely be posting a two-year update when the time comes!
