Its body features many round or rounded elements, which gave it a distinctive look that became very popular with young Americans in the early ‘60s. The arrival of more sophisticated competitive compacts from the Big Three and Japan drove Volkswagen to end U.S. Beetle sales after the 1979 model year, only to introduce its New Beetle for the 1998 model year. The 2018 Beetle gets a new engine for what may be its final year of production. A new 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder uses a new combustion cycle developed at Volkswagen that provides similar power to last year’s 1.8-liter turbo four, but with better mileage. Our reviewer likes the new engine’s efficiency, but found the Dune trim he tested more expensive than its distinctive features could justify and recommended the Coast, another special edition at a lower price, or a base S with the Style & Comfort Package.
