Every year on women's day, we see social media flooded with posts about women empowerment and the important role women play in our society. But why is the spirit of this day so short lived? Within a week, people go back to their old ways and the reality that women in India grapple with stays the same. When women use public transportation in our country, there is a sense of insecurity that we all feel. We don’t sleep while traveling alone, we try to avoid night travel, even if it meant missing important events or job opportunities that entail night shift. Secluded roads and bus stops with dimly lit street lights automatically increase our anxiousness and we do everything we can to try and avoid such situations. If we just look at the public transportation system in Maharashtra, we realise that there is a consistent lack of effort put in by the government that makes women feel unsafe while travelling in public transportation. Most bus stations in Maharashtra don't have separate waiting rooms for women. Some places have "Hirkani" rooms for breastfeeding, but they're often locked and therefore, inaccessible. All these things matter, they help women feel safe and we urge the Maharashtra government to put these measures in place, if they really intend to champion the women of our society.
