Keyword Talk* III – SHELLEY HIRSCH «How stories come out of the body and out of sound» I met Shelley Hirsch (*1952, Brooklyn NY) in her apparment in Manhattan in March 2017 to let her talk about her work as a composer, vocalist and performer, especially her specific methods to generate narratives, the use of the voice as a transgressive organ/instrument, and her approach in performing sound and speech. Shelley Hirsch is a vocalist, composer, and storyteller whose mostly solo compositions, staged multimedia works, improvisations, radio plays, installations and collaborations have been produced and presented all over the world. She did research on the possibilities of extended vocal techniques and got involved in experimental theatre in San Francisco in the 1970s. After returning to New York she became a part of the so-called New York downtown-scene of improvised music, performing with artists and musicians including Christian Marclay, Okkyung Lee, Fred Frith, Anthony Coleman, Tony Buck, Butch Morris, Phill Niblock, Roger Turner, Chantal Dumas, Denman Maroney, Ikue Mori, David Moss, Phil Minton, Sven Ake Johansson, John Zorn, DJ Olive, Min Xiao and Shahzad Ismaily amongst others. Her solo-work consists of a unique style of story-telling mixed with musical composition, improvisation and the use of sounds and noises – several of those works resemble experimental radio-drama and have been produced by ‹New American Radio›. One of these, «O Little Town of East New York» (1992) has been granted the Prix Futura Media Competition and was published as a CD album on Tzadik. A recent project is the duo with turntablist Joke Lanz. http://www.shelleyhirsch.com/shelley/ *Keyword-Talk is a special form of interview, where the interviewee is given a handful of keywords to spontanously talk about, and the interviewer keeps shtum.
