5. Action Verbs vs Linking Verbs Verbs are the heart of every sentence. They tell us what happens, or what something is. In English, there are different kinds of verbs. Two of the most important are action verbs and linking verbs. Let’s look at the difference. ________________________________________ First, action verbs. An action verb shows something that happens. It tells us what someone or something does. For example: run, write, eat, build, think. In the sentence: She runs every morning. The verb runs shows an action. Even actions you can’t see, like think or believe, are still action verbs. ________________________________________ Now, linking verbs. A linking verb does not show action. Instead, it connects the subject to more information about it. The most common linking verb is be. For example: am, is, are, was, were. In the sentence: She is tired. The verb is links she to the word tired. ________________________________________ Linking verbs tell us what something is like, not what it does. Other common linking verbs include: seem, become, feel, appear, look, sound. For example: The idea sounds interesting. He became angry. The soup tastes good. ________________________________________ Some verbs can be action verbs or linking verbs, depending on the sentence. For example: look. She looks at the screen. Here, looks is an action. She looks tired. Here, looks is a linking verb. The verb is the same, but the meaning is different. ________________________________________ Here’s a simple way to check. If the verb shows doing, it’s an action verb. If it links the subject to a description, it’s a linking verb. ________________________________________ Let’s compare two sentences. The man runs fast. The verb runs shows action. The man is fast. The verb is links man to fast. Both sentences are correct, but the verb works differently. ________________________________________ So let’s review. • Action verbs show what someone or something does • Linking verbs connect the subject to information about it • Some verbs can be both, depending on the sentence Understanding this difference helps you: • Choose the right verb • Avoid common mistakes • Describe actions and states more clearly ________________________________________ In the next lesson, we’ll look at helping verbs, and see how they work with main verbs in English.
